There aren’t enough words to describe how much you meant to those around you. You touched the lives of so many. Your humour lives on through your children.

Shannan was welcomed into the world on November 30, 1976 as the much-wanted and much-loved first grandchild in the Hamston family. She was watched over eagerly by me and her other auntie, Sue, because we were delighted to have this new life, this new energy in our family. Over time, it became clear that Shannan was extremely clever. When I returned home after a year travelling overseas, Shannan, then five, eagerly told me she could read her Poppa’s books. Sceptical, I asked her to show me which one, and she pulled down a history of the ANZACS from the shelf and proceeded to read it word for word. I was a teacher when Shannan was young and I observed her closely: listened to her excellent use of spoken language, watched over her writing and noticed her remarkable skill and creativity. I loved reading her school reports, which were consistently excellent and a testament to her broad intelligence. When she moved to high school, I admired her music and performing skills and continued to marvel at the ease with which she learnt new things. In my mind, Shannan is forever that young child with the long blond hair and the wide and generous smile, the wicked sense of humour and the willingness to laugh long and hard at silly things, family things, everyday things. She brought us so much joy … so much joy. Shannan is forever the much-wanted and much-loved first grandchild in the Hamston family. All my love, Julie.

*********

I first met Shannan as partner of her Auntie Julie. She was 16 at the time and I was impressed by her bright, respectful and intelligent personality. I remember her sharp wit and how she could amuse everybody with an embarrassing story about herself or the Hamston family that would have everyone in stitches. Confident and capable, Shannan’s generous nature was always evident whenever we visited or celebrated a family birthday. I will remember Shannan as a passionate and open-minded young woman who brought energy to any occasion. I will always think of those happy times shared in her company. All my love, Andrew.

Shannan, the memories of you bringing out the best in the kids during production will always make me smile. You had a knack of bringing out talents the kids didn’t know they had. Your energy was uplifting. Your energy and passion will live on in Finley, Jarrah and Gypsy. You will be sadly missed. Rest in Peace , Mr G.
Much love
